I have the same question about 3 months ago, i have a 96 n/a that i convert to tt , i use a 90-93 jdm engine with a 96tt ecu, now the car run's great,since the 96 drop vtc system, and the engine came w/ vtc since is a 90-93 engine,i just leave the vtc solenoids unplugged, so my engine vtc is not working, but anyway the car run's pretty good. So i was lucky to get a good jdm engine for 1200 dlls,even the turbos came w/this motor are working, sometimes the turbos are blown with these jdm junk(as many call them junk), i only replace t. belt and components, maintenance parts and gaskets,oil pan and oil pump, so if you dont want to spend more than $2000k then get a jdm engine, but if you plenty of cash, then get an IPP long block and start the project!!!
